How does this go about actually playing and making characters and such?

These are simple play by post games where you take on the role of a character that belongs in that game setting. Most of these games are sandboxes - you do pretty much what you want within the game setting. Usually only some simple rules. If you go crazy and start nuking the game thread, I'll yank you out.

Each game will have an In-Character thread for game play and an Out-Of-Character thread for players to talk outside of the game.

You read the OOC thread to see what's the game is about and what you have to do to create a character for the game. I'm using a very simplistic character sheet for Scorpio. You PM me your character sheet and I'll tell you if that's ok or if you need to fix it.

Once your character sheet is approved, you can then post to the IC thread. You post as your character, using your posted character sheet as a reference. Something happens, you post your character's response to it, then another character replies, and everything moves from there.

If you get into a fight with someone, then the consent rule comes into play. If the other player's character throws a punch at you, they don't decide if they hit you or not - you do. And how badly.

Of course, if you keep ducking while they take punch after punch, after a while the other player won't want to have anything to do with you and they'll just leave.

If the other player tries to direct what your character is doing, that's called god-modding and they'll get a warning or get yanked out of the game.

Does that help?

In Sandbox games the players usually decide what situations come up, although I can post a situation for the players.

Each game will have its own character sheet. This one was for a fantasy game.

Quote:
Name: Sabine Cam (re: Oreheleg)
Gender: Female
Age: 28
Race: Half-elf (Half-human)
Nationality: Babel
Appearance: Tanned but with a slight pallor to the skin, brown hair tied in a braided pony tail, jade-green eyes, slim but muscular build. A hand is branded on her left cheek – thief mark.
Order: Babel Army Scout

Personality: Good in a pinch, Sabine is very guarded and does not talk much; especially to anyone she does not know well. A smile is rare.

Equipment: Elven mail, metal helmet with mail attached, Green & Gold surcoat, long bow and quiver holding two score arrows, Xiphos sword, small round shield, bronze arm bracers. Belt with knife. Medallion on a leather cord with the army crest. For travel, a bed roll holding way bread tied to a leather bandolier that is slung over one shoulder, wrapped in leather to protect it from rain. Two water skins.

The pouches strapped to her leg hold her flint and tinder for making fire, bandages, medicinal herbs, thread and some needles in a needle-safe. Her lock picks are slid under her left arm bracer.

History: Yára, her mother, died in childbirth; Sabine never knew her human father. Her Uncle Limion (a minor judge) and Aunt Riniel (a magic teacher in the SpellSong order) took her in. They were clueless on how to raise a half-human child – she grew too fast. Because she looked older but could not move gracefully or speak as well, most thought Sabine was simple-minded. So Sabine was left to the care of the housekeeper, put to work like a servant almost as soon as she could walk.

When she was older, Sabine was moved to a small, private room in the attic, one of the few concessions for being family.

She learned to read, and would borrow books to take up to her room so as not to get mocked, often without her uncle noticing. This habit of hers got her in trouble. A visitor to their house had brought a book of rare magics with them to show to Aunt Riniel, who was a member of the SpellSong. But the book was stolen from the visitor’s room, and Aldir, her nephew, remembered seeing Sabine taking books to her room. When they searched, they found the charred remains of a book in her fireplace along with a few small rubies that had decorated its cover.

Sabine denied burning the book, so her Uncle had her flogged to obtain a confession – but she never gave in, crying her innocence. Enraged at her defiance, he had her branded on her left cheek with the thieves’ mark and imprisoned for ten years.

It was in prison she met other half-elves like herself, thieves, bandits, even a former spellsong witch, her magic blocked by an amulet locked around her neck. She learned much from them – how to pick locks, pick pockets, stand lookout, palm small items, to fight with a sword, knife or bare hands. Even how to work a few spells – the witch had no power but she could still teach. Other times she would work in the prison kitchens or in the infirmary when sickness swept through the prison.

She emerged ten years later, pale and thinner, only to be met by one of her uncle’s men, who told her she was not welcomed at home, giving her a few coins before leaving her standing in the street.

She tried to get a job, but got turned away again and again because of the thieves’s mark on her cheek. Then fortune smiled on her – a drunk soldier stabbed his friend in a fight. Sabine was working a healing spell she got from the witch when the soldier’s commander arrived. Desperate for skilled witches and wizards to join the army, he signed her up for his scout unit.

For a year, Sabine trained and worked hard as a scout in the Elf King’s Armies before being summoned for this mission.

Note: "Cam" is the Elvish word for "Hand".
