Gamers: Ethics & Religion Discussion of ethics and religion and what place they have around the gaming table. The point of this forum is to give space to all the ethical stuff that is or is not relevant that gamers insist on talking about anyway. Also much discussion of real-world issues including religion and politics. THIS FORUM IS NOT FOR THE THIN-SKINNED! You have been warned.

Default Trump vs. 1st Amendment

In some ways, it's a small thing compared to the outrages Trump represents in office, but his most recent attack on the First Amendment is one of the more nakedly anti-constitutional.

A journalist hired by the Trump campaign to chronicle his first year in the Presidency has published a tell-all book, Fire and Fury. I haven't read it, but by all accounts it is a scathing critique of a dubious campaign followed by a ill-prepared administration. How much of it is true is difficult to ascertain, but the author (Michael Wolff) had access to privileged Trump meetings both during the campaign and early in the administration. He quotes from various insiders for the most damning of his claims (such as Bannon calling Trump Jr. "treasonous".) Much of the tone of the book, per reviews, concerns gossip and salacious opinions of the various campaign personalities.

Rather than let this slide unremarked, the office of the POTUS has issued a cease and desist letter against the publisher, demanding they withdraw the book immediately, or suffer legal repercussions.

The publisher responded by releasing the book early, and with this statement (full link here.)

While Trump comes out smelling, not like a rose, but more like something that will help roses grow, this is a routine sort of thing. Thin-skinned celebrities sue or threaten to sue all the time, or would if somebody didn't explain that they are not only unlikely to win, but will spread the "lies" far wider by such actions. We may desire that our leaders rise above the average, but they retain the normal citizen right to be jerks.
Trump's actions do him no credit, but the adjectives are not needed.
