Arrow Inquisitives - Turn 15

Halflings at the Office

[Round 2]

15 - Hawksley paused, gathering his concentration, waiting for their foes to gather as tightly as possible...

14 - Wireburn

The raptor leaped, exposing its underbelly to the warforged. Wireburn ducked slightly, and sent his sword blade slashing through the raptor and arching through the air toward the other on his left. The creature, stunned by the two pieces of its companion spinning through the air, skidded short. The adamantium blade thudded into the pavement in front of it.

13 - June

Rushing to Mardu’s side seemed like a good idea at first. Seeing a tide of dinosaurs about to overrun the four-armed warforged knight and the other men did little to bolster June’s morale. But seeing Mardu standing beside them all made the Dragon Within rear its head again.

The sorceress moved forward and raised her right hand as words of power left her lips. A blindingly hot ray lanced out at the halfling astride the clawfoot about to bear down on Mardu. A second scorching ray was directed at the raptor behind that one...
Spoiler!

The halfling was nearly thrown back by the force of the blast. A smoking hole was clearly visible in his chest where his heart used to be. The corpse slid off the beast and over the side of the bridge. The second ray struck the next clawfoot in the shoulder, burning through scales and muscles and bone, nearly sending the creature spinning. It staggered from the intense pain, and ceased its forward momentum all together as the halfling astride it pulled at the reins, shrieking in rage.

12 - Raena and Altus

Raena moved herself next to Altus in the doorway and murmured a prayer to the Sovereign Host to Bless her allies in this battle. Altus held his position and readied his shield to protect the priestess, should another volley of arrows or spears come their way.
Spoiler!

12 - Hawksley (who was timing his action just so...)

Hawksley gathered his will and pressed upon the minds of the halflings and raptors alike as they neared. Several resisted, but a few were pliable enough to make contact with. For those, the young psychic pressed even further, willing them to sleep. It had a catastrophic effect, as several halflings fell asleep in their saddles, while a few dinosaurs simply fell forward as sleep took them. Not every halfling was affected, nor every raptor, but one rider and his mount tumbled down as sleep overcame them both at once.

11 - The Hafling Horde...

Unfortunately for Hawksley, the nearest rider and mount were totally unaffected, and the mount slashed at the young man with a claw as the rider stabbed with a short spear. The clawfoot’s talon slipped past the psychic shield and tore into Hawksley’s right leg, but the spear missed completely, bouncing off the invisible protective barrier.
Spoiler!

The halfling warrior astride the slain raptor at Wireburn’s feet had a leg pinned under the weight of his mount. But it was not willing to give up, and drew and fired an arrow at the warforged at point blank range. The arrow bounced harmlessly off the adamantine plating; he might as well have thrown a feather at his foe, for all the good it did. There was a flash of steel as Wireburn’s sword slid through the halfling, nearly splitting him in two like his mount had been.
Spoiler!

A riderless clawfoot (whose master was killed by June) was pushed aside by another beast, and it launched an attack at Mardu instead. The half-orc swung his axe at raptor as it closed, and tore a gash in its belly.
Spoiler!

Two more raptors and their mounts closed in on Wireburn from either side, one biting and the other attacking with claw. Neither the feint nor the claw attack was successful, despite the positioning and teamwork.
Spoiler!

A raptor wounded by June’s scorching ray with a sleeping rider astride it fled the battle, so grievous were its wounds. It hopped the planter and made a dash for the stairs leading down, away from the swinging greatsword and burning beams of fire.

Two riders to the rear of the pack took the opportunity to fire their bows again, as did two halfling on sleeping mounts. Only one arrow seemed destined to even come close to its mark, but even the best placed shot was turned aside by Altus’s shield.
Spoiler!

The riderless glidewing dove at a startled Anselm, but missed when the young artificer ducked out of the way.
Spoiler!

Default Round 2 (Continued)

10 - Durion

From his new vantage point, Durion quickly surveyed the scene outside. The halflings were being held at bay by the indomitable Sir Wireburn and company, and the glidewing was riderless, attacking the artificer below. But something else caught his eye across the way over on the next tower. Almost level with his own position, he saw a man taking up position in a window much as Durion had done. But this human was taking aim with a longbow. A quick calculation indicated to the Magus that the target was in the doorway of the Inquisitive office directly below him!

He weighed his battle options in the blink of an eye. Decision made, Durion gripped his sword tightly and swallowed hard as he sprang from the window. It never occurred to him that he shouldn’t or couldn’t do this; he simply squeezed the pommel of his sword and smiled in grim satisfaction.

The terrace rushed towards him with alarming swiftness, but his target was moving on an intercept course just as he calculated. The glidewing was hovering, trying to reposition itself to attack Anselm again. It was an opportunity the Magus didn’t want to pass up; many a battle in the war had been decided by superior air support.

He landed right on target, wrapping arms and legs around the beast’s body, careful not to throw them both tumbling to the terrace - or worse, to the lower levels beyond - and slid himself into the narrow saddle.

“Beware the sniper!” he bellowed as he gripped the pterosaur’s reins. All thought now was on flying across to the next tower to eliminate the hidden threat!
Spoiler!

9 - Han

Taking the warning, han kept low while he pulled another dagger. He ran to the balustrade to target the same halfling he threw at before, where he lay some twenty feet below on the next terrace. The dagger missed its target however, and the changeling cursed the loss of another dagger...
Spoiler!

8 - Anselm

Anselm marveled at Durion’s temerity. The artificer heard him loud and clear. He also managed find the sniper amidst the windows overlooking the area. He aimed his wand and uttered the command forcing his will upon the magical item.
Spoiler!

Four magical bolts of energy flared from the tip and flew across the chasm to strike the sniper in the window. The figure staggered under the impacts, but did not retreat. Anselm realised the sniper was made of pretty stern stuff to survive the magical attack. He also surmised that he will likely see the riposte. He wasn’t looking forward to it.

6 - Mardu / Deneith Guards

Mardu stepped in under the snapping jaws of the raptor in front of him and drove his shortsword up into its chest. Gouts of blood sprayed from the vicious wound as the half-orc swung his handaxe around to hit the halfling rider. The axe bit deeply in the halfling’s side, but he remained saddled, struggling to control his frantic mount.

Spoiler!

The Deneith guards acted with precision, each wielding a different weapon with a practiced hand. The one to Mardu’s left drove his longsword into the riderless raptor in front of him. To Hawksley’s right, the Deneith guard drove his spear into the clawfoot that just struck the inquisitive. And just behind them both, the last Deneith guard loosed an arrow at the rider of the speared raptor. All three struck true, but managed to make a kill just yet.
Spoiler!

5 - Wolf

A loud clattering noise drew Raena’s attention to the window Durion had just leapt from. She was surprised to see a heavy crossbow balanced on the windowsill. Was this the sniper Durion just warned of?!

The crossbow shuddered as it launched a bolt, which made the priestess yelp. She immediately looked to Durion, but the elf seemed unaware and unharmed. Her eyes scanned for the target, and was surprised to see movement across in the next tower. A heavy bolt was embedded into a window frame across the way, and a dark shape beyond was ducking out of sight.

She quickly turned back to the window above her, and looked right into the yellow eyes of the wolf as it hung its head out the window...

3 - Sniper

From the window across the way, the sniper took aim and fired quickly, not wanting to remain an open target. The burns from the magic missiles still stung, and the bolt had startled him, but his shot was true. His arrow flew across the void and sank deep into its target...

Spoiler!

Raena’s eyes flew open in surprise as she felt the bite of the arrow in her side. She gasped and clutched at it as pain washed over her. She grasped Altus’s shoulder with her other hand, dropping her sword as she struggled to remain standing.

Seeing the sniper’s target, Anselm yelled at Altus. “Get her inside and patch her up. There is a sniper. He’s currently at the second floor, third window from the right. Protect her.”

The paladin was shocked to see she’d been hit, considering he was right next to her. The arrow must’ve passed just behind him. He helped her into the office, shielding her with his whole body now, not taking any chances...

[Rh: Since Anselm was kind enough to shout out the location, everyone more or less knows where the sniper is/was. I have updated the map accordingly.]

Default [Round 3]

14 - Wireburn

The warforged was surrounded by raptors. His bottleneck plan worked. Now all he had to do was shake things up and pop the cork! With three of his four arms used to wield his greatsword, Wireburn pivoted at the waist and swung with all his might. The blade bit deeply in the first clawfoot to his left, slicing cleanly through its chest. The halfling astride the raptor found itself falling with the carcass.

Sir Wireburn used the momentum of his swing to bring the blade across in a wide arc towards the one on his right that had clawed him. The greatsword caught the beast solidly in the side, cleaving partway through its body, stopping at its spine. Steam escaped from the warforged knight’s neck as he pushed a bit harder with the third arm like a piston; the blade slid through the beast’s spine and out the other side. The rider, like raptor he had been riding, was also cleaved in two...
Spoiler!

13 - June

The Dragon Within roared at the beasts threatening her beloved, and June felt the fire well up inside of her. She stepped across to get a better angle and gestured at the two nearest threats to Mardu. Two rays of scorching fire lanced out and struck their targets.

One blast hit the beast to Mardu’s left, and the second went over his shoulder to hit the one bearing down upon the half-orc. Both had devastating effect as they tore through both raptors. The beasts were dead before they hit the flagstones...
Spoiler!

12 - Raena and Altus

The paladin moved Raena to the couch as she shuddered in pain. She was terribly pale and her breathing was already shallow. The arrow had entered through her side and looked like it went straight through her heart. Altus murmured a prayer to Dol Arrah as he removed the arrow swiftly and immediately willed her to heal, laying his hand over the wound. Raena’s breathing steadied a bit, and the paladin held her gently, his shield strategically placed between the priestess and the door.
Spoiler!

12 - Hawksley

The young psychic, well aware of the clawfoot and rider nearly on top of him, cleared his mind and acted defensively. Hawksley stretched his senses and forced his will upon the attacking raptors and their halfling riders once again.
Spoiler!

Much to his relief, most of them drifted off to slumber...

11 - The Hafling Horde...

Only two halflings remained awake after the psychic attack. Each raised their bows and sighted their targets. One took aim at the man leaning over the balustrade, separated from the rest of the group. The arrow took Han in the ribs, sinking to the fletchings. The changeling convulsed in pain as the arrow slid between his ribs and lodged in his right lung.
Spoiler!

The other halfling warrior took aim at the elf now riding the glidewing. The arrow found Durion’s leg...
Spoiler!

9 - Han

8 - Anselm
[SB: pre-emptive strike - Assuming that the sniper is still alive, same move as last turn.][Rh: Roger Roger.]
