Default Discussion - Pathfinder - Tracking Feat...

...Or rather, a lack thereof.

Pathfinder did away with the Tracking Feat, wrapping the ability to track into the Survival Skill. Per the Pathfinder rules, Rangers add half their level as a bonus to their Survival Skill checks made while following or identifying tracks.

I am also assuming that this means that Urban Tracking will be obsolete, relegating the ability to Diplomacy checks (Gather Info has been folded into Diplomacy), with modifiers based on the D&D Urban Tracking Feat. Does this make sense?

Or...

Do we want to maintain Urban Tracking as a separate Feat?

What are your thoughts on this?

I think we should just dispense with the Urban Tracking feat and fold its functionality into the description of Diplomacy.

Alternatively, if people feel that tracking (of either type) is too cool of a thing to fold into a single skill, it could be made into something like a 4e skill challenge, where you need to make a certain number of skill successes (across a number of skills) within a set number of rolls. So, for example, standard tracking might require a certain number of Perception checks, Survival checks and possibly Knowledge (nature) checks, while urban tracking might require a certain number of Bluff, Diplomacy and Sense Motive checks (or something like that). Rangers would have a bonus to any sort of tracking activity, say, something like a certain automatic number of successes that increases with level or more rolls in which to reach the required successes. So, you might need to make 5 successful checks before rolling 3 failures or somesuch -- I don't know the specifics of how skill-challenges work, but it strikes me as cool way of handling complex tasks.

IMO, tracking works better as a function of skill use rather than as a feat. Having certain classes be better at it makes sense.

Folding Urban Tracking into Diplomacy also makes sense, under the circumstances.

I'm fine with the above. I'll switch out for another feat. Makes sense too.

Okay, I will make it official then...

Tracking and Urban Tracking Feats are no longer required and we reference the Pathfinder rules for tracking, using the appropriate Skill checks. Classes with bonuses towards tracking will reference the PF rules about how much of a bonus to apply to those skill checks.

And if it's not a PF class but references tracking as a class feature, let me know and we'll do a fair conversion.

Hope that addresses everything.
