Gronk ran for his life. He knew the largest worm would only be delayed by the tunnel collapse. He saw the footprints of his friends on the floor, momentary patches of heat that were already beginning to cool. He could see the bobbing torch far ahead, as Rooker carried it.

Rooker, Fan, Selsdrin and Malek didn't wait. They knew the half-ogre would catch up with them soon. They heard his raging cries and the battering of his hammer against the tunnel's wall.

They could also see writhing everywhere in the tunnel. The worms were everywhere, crawling out of crevices and tiny cracks in the floor and ceiling.

Fan looked up just in time to see one of the creatures fall and attach itself to his forehead. He screamed, whether with agony or pleasure no one could say, as the worm bored into his temple and disappeared with a schlurp inside his skull. Fan simply stopped running, and calmly put his hands inside his sleeves and walked calmly into a side tunnel filled with the writhing worms before anyone could stop him.

Malek turned just in time to see what happened to Fan. He was reluctant to leave the physicker behind to be devoured slowly by the larva, but he was not about to go chasing after the poor bastard to put him out of his misery. The lumbering shape of Gronk moving up behind the group snapped the half-orc back to his senses.

"They're dropping from above!" he bellowed to the others. "Keep moving!"

The half-orc ran on, praying to whatever gods were listening that the rest of their group made it out safely...

Malek may have imagined it, but it seemed the worms dropped from the ceiling in greater numbers. He sidestepped two of them.

The four adventurers burst from the cave at a full run. The worms themselves seemed unbothered by the light, and continued to crawl after them.

Gronk and Malek grabbed the boat and sprinted down the hill. They saw the Fire Rose slowly moving around the bend at the top of the channel. Running down the hill, the group worked as a team for the first time. Rooker and Selsdrin had the oars ready as they hit the beach. They launched out into the water with Gronk's powerful arms working the oars. Everyone sat low in the boat.

They came alongside the Fire Rose and were pulled up into the boat.

"That thrice-damned navy ship was right on our tail," said one of the halflings. "Kept taking shots at us with archers from the top deck, but we stayed out of range. They're coming around the far side of the island, so the captain is hoping to make it to the warm currents headed south."

"The Physicker is gone," Malek rumbled when they reported to the Captain. The half-orc tried to blink away the image of the worm-like larva that bored so easily into Fan's head, like a hungry worm into a soft apple. The image was persistent.

"There was a huge beast, the mother of those...things," he continued on when the fire-haired woman's gaze held his. "I think it woke when we got too close. It was...bigger than the Fire Rose..." Malek faltered, looking for words to describe the monstrosity. The bodies of the victims lurked in his mind's eye, hollow, with translucent skin, eaten inside out by those things... "Gronk tried to bring the cave down, but I don't think that stopped it. We got out as fast as we could, but Fan didn't make it..."

Selsdrin continued to huddle under his cloak and cowl, saying nothing. The cave had been a safe respite from the oppressive sun ruined by that disgusting creature. If they could destroy the ship that pursued them, they could keep it contained on the island until some sort of massive flame producing magics could be procured.

At that point (and that point only) would the game truly be at an end.

Selsdrin looked out into the endless ocean vista as the sun set on another day, pushing the tiny umbrella away from his lips and sipping on a rum infused fruit drink. As the mind-numbing pain of the sun faded, he felt at peace for the first time in a very long time.

The deck chair beneath him shifted with his weight, and a uniformed halfling with a nametag that said "Isaac" replaced the now empty glass with a fresh cool one. He would take more time with this one.
