Selsdrin's first feeling upon entering the cave was one of relief. His painful headache quickly receded as a cloud covers the sun. He breathed in the musty smells and sweet closeness of the underground.

He glanced at the discovery, then quickly moved away from the torch and the larvae to examine the rest of the cave for clues as to their origin.

And loot. If there was a dead body, there had to be loot.

"They hollowed him out," he told them from the cool darkness. "That's what the rest of them have to look forward to. Slowly being digested from the inside out."

He would leave the disposal of these disgusting to his comrades while he searched. They needed to move quickly or the ship would leave without them.

As Selsdrin stepped out of the torch's warmth, his eyes adjusted to the dark.

Far beyond the reach of what the half-ogre or the half-orc could see, out beyond the cool shifting currents of damp underground air, he saw a warm, pulsing glow on the floor. It seemed to be a pit perhaps a hundred feet away.

Malek noticed Selsdrin move onward away from the grim discovery. The half-orc was both fascinated and completely disgusted by the hollowed out corpse and the squirming larvae within. He tore his eyes away from the translucently-skinned body and quietly followed the moredhel to watch his back. Who knew what was lurking down here that might even be able to take a dark elf by surprise...

Selsdrin approached the hotspot in an oblique fashion, crossing the cavern floor and adjusting his height as well. At times, he crouched low to the ground as he walked, at others, practically on his tiptoes. The adjustments would allow him to see any shifts or variations in the heat signature.

If it was the source of the little toothsome maggots, it would be a fully grown female, and might have males guarding it.

With that much heat radiating out, it might have the ability to cast fire.

He remembered the fate of one trainee who had overslept.

He could hear the screams yet.

The ship would not wait.

He readied himself to run.

Next to the figure, Rooker saw monkish robes, a travel bag, and a plain quarterstaff. He checked them quickly for possible larvae, then tucked the robes in the pack and slung it on cross-body. He slid his own staff into it's quiver and took up the plain quarterstaff, giving it a quick twirl and checking its true. Looking back at the body, with its gruesome payload, he looked over at Xiong Fan, to see if he perhaps wanted to try to harvest some.

Although the skins littering the floor were room temperature, and thus invisible to his night eyes, Selsdrin sometimes thought he could see shifts or wrinkles in the floor's surface as the larvae dug through the cooled remains. His boots rarely touched bare earth or rock.

The pit itself radiated warmth like an oven, or a furnace. As he stepped closer, he noticed the occasional escape of warmer air indicating breath. He finally reached the crest of the pit, and looked down. The others joined him.

For a moment before Gronk arrived, Selsdrin saw the thing as merely a map of layers of heat. It was perhaps thirty feet long, and bloated like a maggot. Along what appeared to be its underbelly, there were attached numerous pods or egg capsules. Several of these appeared to be burst open. Writhing and basking in the creature's heat, Selsdrin saw both larvae and the more well-developed worms like that which erupted out of the child's mouth. Many of these attached like lampreys to the soft underbelly of their mother, pulsing and gorging themselves on her life fluids.

The creature itself defied description, like a blasphemy of nature. Selsdrin could see no head or eyes. It was worm and parasite, obese and tentacled, stench and oozing foul pus from the broken egg chambers that continued to ripen and mature on its belly. A thing of the outer dark.

The foul smell almost choked him, and made him gag.

Selsdrin considered the sight before him and wished for a moment that he did not see quite as well in the dark. For one, he would not have to experience the repulsive creatures before him.

For another, he would have oil to burn it.

He had no arrows.

He looked for a keystone with which he could set off a cavern collapse as he backed away. He would tell his companions in case they had some way of destroying the thing, but he knew of no immediate solution.

Time and tide wait for no elf.

Selsdrin arrived back to his companions nearer the entrance and reported his findings, ending with "...so, I recommend we nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure."

Malek tilted his head to the side quizzically. "Nuke...? Orbit...?" He shook his head. Something had obviously shaken the moredhel.

"I fear that this game has played out fully. It is done." He looked at the others. "What shall we do now?" The half-orc muttered quietly.

OOC: as I envisioned it, everyone in the group has seen what is in the pit.
