Rooker stepped quickly to the mast, standing somewhat under the boom. To cross this distance, the arrows would have been shot nearly straight up and thus would be coming nearly straight down. He stood slightly to the side of the boom, in its rain- (or hopefully arrow-) shadow. He took his jo to hand to deflect any arrows that found their way past his cover.

Malek turned to the main mast only to find Rooker offering an apologetic smile. Damn.

In the blink of an eye, he saw Selsdrin and the halflings take to the rigging to dodge the incoming arrows, and Fan and Gronk still on deck. And Úllothien, looking almost defiant at the incoming barrage.

A step and a half to the nearest hatch, and the half-orc heaved it off its hinges. Morgana could flay him for it later, if they survived. Three steps back and he heaved the door like a large shield over himself, Fan, and Úllothien, hoping the arrows wouldn't penetrate the thick wood...

Rooker looked around, aghast: about him, many of the crew stood, open-mouthed, gaping in frozen panic. In a split-second, a cascade of arrows would sheet down amongst them in a lethal rain. He sighed internally -- arrow deflection was easy, in theory, right? He spun his jo and summoned his concentration, thinking back to the cloister. He had excelled in this discipline. But back then, he rarely faced more than five archers at a time. The only advantage he had here was that they were going for saturation and that everything was coming from the same direction. He leapt and exhaled, placing himself more-or-less in the center of a rough group of men. Some had the proverbial deck, killing their mobility and making themselves bigger targets. He would do his best for them, but his hopes were highest amongst those remaining standing. He danced out, his pattern of footwork describing the petals of a flower, spinning, whirling and twisting with each pass... Eight petals, taking him out and back from the center in a radial pattern. His staff almost whistled as it sped through the air. There cracks and hums, screams, and... three tracings of the lotus and the deadly rain was done. About him there were many, many broken arrows, three arrows sticking out of his staff, one in his hand where he caught it. Another arrow dangled from his sleeve somehow, snagged without catching flesh. Within the radius of his staff, the men were unharmed, save for a line of blood across one cheek and one palm nailed to the deck (one of those lying prone).

Xiong Fan's eyes widen as he realizes the sudden, very real, very physical danger. He knows (or at least has a sneaking suspicion) what the fire rod is likely to do. He looks about for a suitable hatch to dive into.

Finding none in close range, he cowers behind Gronk. Ogre flesh can withstand fire, right?

Gronk looked at Xiong Fan hiding behind him and gave a disproving snort. The deck was a full of people scrambling for cover, most of them had never seen combat before and therefore little more than useless in Gronk's eyes. He grabbed two of the halflings that ran the rigging and rekindled his previous idea of using them as a shield. The two halflings screamed to be let go and tried to wriggle free. After slamming the two of them together on their heads they both fell silent. It wasn't ideal but it would have to do.

The volleys of arrows rose, arched and fell with a silent beauty between the two ships. For the space of several breaths, the crew pulled shields over their heads, and watched. As the arrows began their descent, Rooker and Selsdrin heard the hiss before everyone else. The arrows thudded into the deck and cut through the sails like paper. Crewmen cried out as they were pierced through shields. Some died.

Gronk bowed under the hatch Malek had pulled from the ship. The halflings in his hands wriggled and moaned. Selsdrin hid with two halflings under one of the lower nests for lookouts. Malek's hatch shook in his hands as arrows landed solidly in the wood.

Mog leaned over Morgana. Arrows sank into his thick shoulders and back.

Rooker's staff spun with impossible speed, nudging arrows in the arrow, guiding them into deck.

Finally, the arrows stopped. The deck looked like the back of a porcupine. Mog pulled several arrows out of his back, the wounds closing almost instantly.

Then, the First Mate on the Fidelity stepped up onto the eagle's head prow. The wand in his hand let go of its captive star, and the fireball shot straight across the distance between the two ships. Morgana started to shout, but the attack was too sudden, too vicious.

The fireball exploded against the main mast. The two halflings in the main crow's nest were slightly higher than the fire. The sail erupted in flame and fell toward the deck. All of the ropes fell with flaming ends into the water.

Oddly, the mast still stood. The wood was a little darkened.

Mog thudded Gronk on the shoulder. "Oars," he said. "Grab one."

The crew threw oars into the water. Mog and Gronk took the primary oars on either side, slightly ahead of the middle of the ship. As the more experienced rower, Mog took the inside. Gronk threw his raw strength into the outer oar, turning the ship.

"Pull! Pull, you bunch of whoresons!" screamed Morgana. The Fire Rose pulled away from the Fidelity, and out of arrow range before they could begin another volley. The First Mate raised his wand again, but thought better of it as the Fire Rose limped around the island.

Selsdrin put away the vellum and oddly shaped dice for later. He was now convinced of the truth of the surface female's story. He absent mindedly patted out the smouldering spots on the halflings clothing as they put away their books.

They would need to rerig the sails, and that quickly.

He and his little colleagues of the mainsails got to work immediately.

"Captain, if you've got any tricks up your sleeve to outrun that frigate," Malek said as he cleared the deck of charred debris, "now would be a good time to use them."

The half-orc took up one of the oars and set his back to rowing as well - the more distance they could put between them and the Fidelity, the more time they had to live. If another fireball managed to hit the deck, it was going to be a quick and crispy end, and the Fire Rose would be more than just a pretty name...

"We can not out run them." Gronk shouted over the din. "Let Mog, Malek and I lead a boarding party. We will cut them down where they stand! When we are done the sea will run red with elf blood!"

The idea certainly had merit. It was utterly suicidal, but it did have merit. If they lived long enough to get aboard the Fidelity, that is.

"If we take a boat over, they'll cut us down with arrows before we even reach her hull," Malek rumbled.

Then he remembered a bounty that tried to lose him in the sewers below the city. The thief tried waiting him out in a large collection pool, hiding just under the surface, breathing through a reed. If she hadn't breathed in too much bad air from the rotting sewage, she might've gotten away. But this was sea water out here, not sewage...

"However..." the half-orc pondered aloud, "If we were to look like flotsam, they might not bother with us, allowing us to get close enough to their hull. We could hide beneath some debris, breathe through reeds if we need to, and wait for the Fidelity to get close enough. Then we put a hole in her hull and get the hell out of there." That, of course, was the weak point of the plan; getting away alive. He'd have to work on that part before it became too late.

He looked to Captain Morgana to see what she thought of the idea.
