Xiong Fan's lips twitched into a wry smile. "An answer. Did someone mention pitch?"

Selsdrin perked up at this, and at the knowledge revealed by the actions of their foes. "Excellent. Captain, at your command, we could take advantage of the weather gauge and set sail. The rowboats could not keep up, and it will take them time to recover the boats. In the meantime, we can ready the pitch for battle."

He looked over his shoulder at the boats rowing toward them.

"What say you, Captain?"

Morgana seemed undecided.

On the one hand, the elven imperial navy were lawful agents of Her Majesty on the high seas. If the captain of the Fidelity were truly guilty of these crimes, she would be harboring a fugitive of justice. If the stories brought back were true, letting the marines on her ship would be suicide. Or worse.

[OOC: You can either roleplay this, or try a skill check. Your choice.]

Selsdrin's looked at the incoming long boats and around at the crew. None of them were moving. They were not setting sail!

He remembered what that thing looked like as it chewed through Redshirt's skull, and bile filled his mouth. His head throbbed under the torture of the laughing fairy and his fucking chariot.

With difficulty, he calmed his voice and tried to sound reasonable. "Captain, I respectfully submit that if you are worried about harboring a fugitive of the Imperial Navy, toss her overboard and they will pick her up. I've seen what those things do to a person. They will burrow through your skull with their many sharp teeth and dance around in you like a sock puppet at a Punch & Judy Show."

He paused, watching the horror of his words sink into her thick stupid sun-drenched brain.

"Please set sail, Captain. Throw her over or don't, but please..."

He forced control over his bodily functions. A piece of coal would become a diamond in his bowels, as tight as he clenched.

"Please give the order to set sail."

"Captain, the closer those rowboats get, the more dangerous they are. We saw one of those things leap from one body to the next -- what if they have eggs? What if they can infect us without one leaving one body for another? We need to keep our distance."

Gronk looks for something heavy to drop on the boarders tiny boats with the hopes of capsizing one if they get close enough.

"Let them come! Gronk is ready."

"Gronk is ready to fight elves," Malek said calmly to the half-ogre. "But not those things. There is no glory in a fight with those things. We'd end up fighting whoever they take over, friend or foe. Redshirt wasn't our enemy. He was one of ours. Let's not let that happen to everyone else..."

He was addressing Gronk, but he knew that Morgana was listening as well. So was the rest of the crew.

Morgana resolved herself.

"Let's move. Get this ship moving! Angle us away from that frigate. I want to catch the wind and swing around the island before they can get around the shelf. Move!

"Navigator! I want to know the fastest currents taking us south."

Everything on the ship started moving. The marines in the boats saw the ship begin to pull away. They tried to catch up, but the Fire Rose was a faster ship.

"I hope you lads are right. Because I just ended my relationship with Lord Starhawk if that was a lawful boarding."

Then she squinted a moment.

"Arrows! Arrows! Under cover!"

The archers on the Fidelity put three volleys in the air, arching in an inverted U through the air.

Indicate your actions at this time.

There will be a saving throw vs. breath weapon for anyone who doesn't take cover or find a shield.

You also see the First Mate step to the eagle's head prow of the Fidelity, and aim a rod taken from his belt at the Fire Rose. The end of the rod starts glowing, like a captured star.

[OOC: Saving throw difficulties will be partly determined on the coolness and creativity of what people come up with. ]

Mog will stand over Morgana, and cover her from arrow fire.

At the sound of bowstrings, Selsdrin's head snapped around. Arrows were the craft and the weapon of his most ancient and hated enemy. The tools of cowards.

As he was trained, he instantly calculated their distance, time in flight, and trajectory.

Quick as a snake, he sheathed his swords and grabbed the two nearest halflings, instructing them to "Hold on!"

Startled out of their initial shock, they took hold of his sword belt. just before he grasped the closest line and began to pull them all up hand over hand. He and his charges watched the arrows hit the deck and their unlucky crewmates from the safety of the mainsail boom.

He wondered, momentarily, where they had gotten the bags of popcorn.
