Default The Abyss Stares Back [Season 1: Episode 3]

After studying the ground Gronk stood and adjusted his armor. Everyone was milling about waiting for him to tell them what he had learned.

None of them had spent the kind of time he had in the wild living off the land, learning what to look for and what to discard. To them it was no more than dimples in the dirt to him it told a story. Sometimes the voice that told that story was loud and clear. Other times no more than a whisper. But it was always there waiting to be heard.

"Here." He said. "Someone was taken and carried away. They went that way."

Selsdrin looked in the direction the half-ogre pointed, searching for signs of an enemy presence or rear guard. He saw a chance to help the group, and leapt at it.

"Does everyone agree we should scout the area? Redshirt, you and I will take point. You want to take left or right flank?" Selsdrin would keep the clumsy idiot in sight. When whatever it was attacked the weakest link, he would take note of their strength and numbers. Scouting was easier when you hated your partner.

Redshirt took the right flank. He held his shortsword in front of him, arms rigid, fingers trembling.

The group moved through the village, weapons draw. Not even the wind stirred. The only sound as they approached the northern end of the village was the buzzing of flies. Several of you have been in large battles, or seen the cleanup after one. Even so.

There was a large fire pit between the village and the hill that rose up to the highest point on the island. Selsdrin and Redshirt reached the pit first, and peaked over the edge. At the bottom were bodies. Lots of them. There were signs - shovels, pots, broken plates - that the villagers had been forced to dig their own graves, and bury their own dead. The stench was overwhelming. Redshirt leaned over and immediately deposited his lunch on the ground.

Kneeling on the pile of bodies at the bottom of the pit was a filthy young boy.

Skinny with hunger, yet apparently unafraid, he knelt upon the pile of bodies covered with a thin layer of sand like a frog. His head slowly turned, and his dark eyes stared unblinking at the group.

Fan, make an Intelligence check DC 12.

Selsdrin and Rooker, maybe an Intelligence check DC 18.

Add your Int bonuses to the roll, and your level +1.

Rooker clutched his staff, bringing it up to guard involuntarily, as his stomach clenched in fear.

Selsdrin squinted his eyes at the bright sunlight in the clearing and considered the small boy through a haze of renewed pain. He recalled the fear his visage inspired in humans and retreated to the treeline and watched to make sure the little boy didn't escape. He would allow one of the others to make first contact.

As he moved, he briefly considered, then resisted, pushing Redshirt down into the pit with the rest of the useless waste of otherwise perfectly good meat.

Xiong Fan examined the boy closely. It amused him to see his companions recoiling from such a sight. He had seen this and much worse in his master's domain. He narrowed his eyes and nodded thoughtfully.

"Eh. It is a riddle put before us, but take care in searching for the answer, for we are not altogether alone in this place."

The boy picked his way up the side of the pit, stepping from body to body gracefully and without rush. The group watched him climb. Rooker moved back toward Selsdrin. Malek and Gronk shifted to combat-ready stances flanking the boy. Fan took a few leisurely steps to a more defensible position, and he smiled to himself.

Cresting the top of the pit, the boy stood before Redshirt. The young half-elf, eager to overcome his earlier fear and lack of competence, stood his ground. He gripped his short sword firmly in his grasp, and brought it to shoulder level.

"Who are you?" he demanded. "And what foul deed happened here? Speak, if you can!"

The boy nodded for a moment, though it wasn't certain why. He opened his mouth as if to speak, and gagged a bit. Redshirt caught him by the shoulder to steady him. The young boy gripped his hand, and looked up again, mouth slightly open.

The thing inside him exploded from his mouth. The boy's body crumpled like a puppet with its strings cut. The thing could have been a snake, or a worm. Its body seemed whitish and opaque, like a maggot. But it latched onto Redshirt's forehead with a mouth filled with circles of razor sharp teeth.

Redshirt dropped his sword, and screamed. He clutched vainly at the creature tunneling directly through his skull. The worm's muscular body contracted and undulated, squeezing through the hole its teeth cut through the bone with astonishing speed. It took a moment, perhaps two.

Redshirt shuddered, as if feeling a cold breeze or entering water too chilly for his own comfort. Then a look of peace came over his face. Blood dripped down his forehead, and his eyes appeared to bulge a bit in their sockets while the thing settled down inside his skull.

Selsdrin took an awkward step back at the abrupt violence of the creature.

Then another, this one more solid and sure. "Burn it. Burn it now or we all die."

"What?" cries Xiong Fan, "We must capture it alive. So that we may...learn what manner of threat it poses."

The Drow drew a sword with his right hand and buckler with his left. "Fuck that. You can have whatever is left once we kill it."

Redshirt took a moment to look at each person in turn, staring deeply as if memorizing each face.

Malek, behind his mask; Gronk, Rooker with his staff, Fan with his bow, Selsdrin.

He then picked up his short sword from where it dropped, and drew a dagger from his belt.
