Selsdrin stood aside in whatever shadows he could find, his cowl up, his eyes slitted against the sun. His cloak was packed with the rest of his gear.

He'd faked a pleasant disposition as best he could in front of the captain, but his patience for such things in the face of that fairy bastard's shiny chariot was rapidly waning.

He watched what he could, and listened to everything, learning as much as possible through his splitting headache.

Malek melded easily into the ship's crew once he stowed his larger weapons in the Mate's cabin. [OOC: No, this is not going to be used to screw anyone. It's for flavor. Promise.] Suits of heavy armor, like Gronk's scale mail, were set up on racks and young cabin boys assigned to strap on armor and prepare the warriors if they were needed.

Leather armor was accepted on the ship. Many of the crew wear pieces of it, although full leather armor is rare. Many go unarmored, although there is also a number of shields stowed on the sides of the ships just below the railing in case of an arrow storm.

Daggers and knives were the most common weapons, as they doubled as tools for cutting rope or food during meals. When the occasional fight broke out between crew members, Mog generally served as referee and pulled the victor off before things most encounters turned lethal. One young man stabbed Mog with a dagger after being pulled off another sailor who owed him money from a game of dice.

Mog walked him to the side of the ship, and pitched him over the side without hesitation. There were no more lethal fights after that. Mog let the dagger stand in the wound for a few moments, before plucking it out and hurling it into the boards on the far side of the ship. The dagger landed perfectly, point first. Mog's wound closed before he took ten paces.

Rooker also found himself fitting in easily enough. He'd always had an easy way with conversation, whether with a high-born lord or a butcher.

Much of the crew was either human, half-elven or half-orc. There were a lot of half-breeds. There were no dwarves or gnomes, and the handful of halflings worked mostly in the ships rigging and climbed about a lot.

Selsdrin volunteered for the night watches, but that only increased the cew's suspicion of his motives. His hard work splicing and repairing rigging only lead to a halfling warrant officer being assigned to double check it and make certain he wasn't secretly trying to sabotage the sails.

At first, he wanted to protest, but held his tongue. He would do his work, say as little as possible, and watch for his chance to prove his worth. His night shifts relaxed him enough that his headache faded. He found a place in the deep hold to hang his hammock during the day.

He waited for the rest of the crew to come to him.

In the meantime, while he awaited the unlikely spontaneous generation of his social life, Selsdrin Everhar took advantage of his ability to walk silently and his sharper senses to explore the ship from rhe mizzen to the scuppers. He spoke little, but listened much, asked for lessons in the running of the ship, and got refused repeatedly.

For sub-elven illiterate and uneducated scum that had barely a braincell among them, the sailors aboard this ship certainly had a lot of prejudices against Drow. They believed the most ridiculous rumors and superstitions about the Underdark. Mostly, though, they talked endlessly about the ship's mission and what they thought it might be.

Rooker took to life asea with the focused, attentive demeanour drilled into him since childhood. The Order, more than teaching a fixed set of skills and practices, emphasized learning, balancing assimilation and accommodation. In some cases, the correct approach is to bend the situation to one's skills, to hammer the nail (or sufficiently nail-like problem). In other cases, it was best to let the situation dictate the shape of novel applications of old skills or even the growth of new skills altogether.

Thus far, some parts of the voyage came easily: his carefully trained and cultivated balance made rolling decks an easy challenge to master. Other parts came less easily -- he had to work to try and fit in with the old sea dogs. His practiced methods of cultural assimilation were perhaps a bit too obviously practiced. Still, while not a crew favourite, neither was he the voyage goat. He was drawn to these outsiders -- his companion from the library was an odd-duck, but one that Rooker felt some sense of loyalty to. He kept contact, but with a respectful, private distance. The others were more approachable: the massive half-ogre, Gronk, and the muscular half-orc Malek both intrigued Rooker. They were men who carved out acceptance by virtue of their value, their strengths. Despite their mixed monstrous parentage, they easily had the respect (and in some cases the bonhommie) of the crew. And then there was Selsdrin, the drow. Rooker was curious: he had never clapped eyes on a dark elf before. He had read of them, seen images of them; he had some vague cultural sense of them, via his knowledge of the common trade tongue of the Underdark. But no real first-hand knowledge. These four: Gronk, Malek, Selsdrin, and Xiong Fan were the people with whom Rooker managed some form of connection.
