While ye might be welcomed in some parts of the city, all races serve in Lord Starhawk's service and are welcomed if they keep the law."
Selsdrin gave the "men" who had taken a step back a baleful glare as he drew off the rest of his disguise. He stowed it in his pack and arranged his arms and armor about him. The quality of his armor was readily apparent to anyone with eyes and a brain.

Gronk, having one out of two, ignored the Drow's preening.

Selsdrin looked for more paperwork, and finding none, stood and watched Gronk hurt people. He continued to watch his back, and Gronk's, scanning the crowd. He smiled in a friendly manner to any who deigned to meet his eye, and engaged in friendly conversation with any who approached.

That would be none and none, for awhile, at least.

He had to have the joke explained to him the first time he heard it, but he enjoyed repeating it.

Selsdrin, you have a pretty good sense that Gronk was hired the moment he showed up. Since he seems to like you, that means you're hired, too. One of the sergeants will quietly let you know that on the Watch they like having drow or duergar or svirfneblin because of their night vision. So it actually worked in your favor to reveal yourself.

The hiring will last another day or two. As you have a good sense for selecting candidates, they will offer you 25 GP to help them eliminate the incompetent. There are 50 slots for "adventurers" on this voyage.

Selsdrin, give me a Wisdom check. The base DC is 12.

Selsdrin stood before the ranks of sellswords at parade rest, his hands at the small of his back. Gronk loomed above and behind him, glaring. A ragged bunch of unlikely adventurers stood in an odd assortment of arms and armor and listened without much patience.

"Who here is hungry!?" Selsdrin began.

Many of the hands went up.

"Excellent! Supper will be served after testing! Our first test will consist of simple physical endurance! Follow me in these exercises, and we will soon be eating!" Selsdrin remembered the best barbecue he'd ever had, the one after his selection. The meat had just fallen off the bone, and it had been drenched in a tangy sweet and spicy sauce that had made his eyes water. He had been incredibly hungry, and had eaten until he was sure his insides were going to burst.

He cleared his throat and grinned at the memory. There were many nervous glances at the bright white teeth in the dark black face that made his canines more pronounced. He began to walk up and down the rows, inspecting and spacing them out so that they would have enough room.

Gronk followed behind him, ensuring compliance with his mere presence, and the occasional mutter. He slapped at them playfully, checking their stances and strength.

Selsdrin continued, as he observed. "As you all know, there are only a limited number of spaces in the recruit pool! For those of you in heavy armor, you should know that the recruit pool is where we will conduct the swim test!" He didn't bother to suppress a chuckle at the shocked looks on some of them.

"We will end these exercises when a sufficient number of you have dropped out! We have limited needs! Any questions?" Without permitting enough time for any questions, Selsdrin began basic exercises. The run would come next.

"The strong will eat! The weak will not!" He yelled at them in Undercommon. The words of his own instructors came to his ears.

"The strong! Be strong or die!"

"The strong will eat! You are not strong!" They had yelled this at the volunteers.

"He was not strong!" They had reminded them, day after day. Night after night. No food was provided. The bodies of those that fell were removed.

"She was not strong! Be strong!" On and on they ran with no rest. They sucked furtive trickles from the cave walls as they ran.

"The strong will eat the weak!" He heard it echoing in his mind as he felt his feet padding ahead of the weaklings.

He was disappointed with himself for altering the training regimen, but soft surface dwellers couldn't handle the full brunt of what Drow could. It was that yellow chariot driven by that flaming fairy. It made them weak.

The loud growling of the little elf's stomach made Gronk turn his head to look at Selsdrin.

Selsdrin nodded at Gronk and he dropped back to the rear of the column to provide proper motivation. He lead and did not look back, even when he heard footfalls slow or meat strike ground.
